On Wednesday dated 24 /07/24, a Saurya Airlines plane crashed and caught fire while taking off from Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport, resulting in the deaths of 18 people. The pilot, who is currently in the hospital, is the sole survivor.
The test flight had 19 people on board, including technical staff and two crew members. The crash occurred almost immediately after takeoff, with the plane tilting and then bursting into flames upon impact.
Rescue workers found the wreckage engulfed in fire and smoke, with large parts of the plane charred. Emergency services quickly responded to the scene.
Seventeen victims were Nepali nationals, and one was a Yemeni engineer. The pilot sustained injuries to his eyes and forehead but is not in life-threatening danger.
This incident highlights Nepal’s poor aviation safety record, previously noted in the January 2023 Yeti Airlines crash that killed 72 people.
Saurya Airlines, operating with a fleet of three Bombardier CRJ-200 jets, now faces scrutiny over their safety protocols.
