Peaceful Protest Against Waqf Amendment Bill 2024 in Patna, Bihar

Patna witnessed a massive peaceful protest today, organized by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) against the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024. The demonstration saw participation from various Muslim organizations, social activists, and political leaders. Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav were also present, addressing the protesters and assuring them of their party’s support against what they termed an “unconstitutional” amendment targeting the Muslim community’s waqf properties.

The AIMPLB has announced a nationwide movement against the bill, with large-scale sit-ins planned in cities like Patna and Vijayawada. Speaking at the protest, AIMPLB spokesperson SQR Ilyas expressed gratitude for the widespread support and stated that rallies and demonstrations would be organized across the country, with the involvement of various political parties and minority groups.

One of the key figures at the protest was Maulana Faisal Rahmani, the Amir-e-Shariat of Imarat Shariah, Bihar, who strongly opposed the bill. He described it as an attack on the fundamental rights of the Muslim community, warning that the proposed amendments would severely impact waqf institutions and their autonomy.

Several political leaders, including former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, criticized the bill. He remarked that protests against it were justified, as the legislation seemed to single out one particular religious community.

The demonstrators called for the immediate withdrawal of the bill, arguing that it undermines the interests of Muslims and jeopardizes their waqf properties. The AIMPLB and other Muslim organizations reiterated their stance that this bill is an infringement on minority rights and vowed to continue their resistance against it.

The AIMPLB also took to Twitter, posting: “The ongoing protest in Patna against the Waqf Amendment Bill sends a strong message to the government and its allies that this bill is nothing but an attempt to seize Muslim waqf properties. The Muslim community will not tolerate this injustice under any circumstances and will remember those who supported its passage.”

With growing opposition from political parties and civil society, the movement against the Waqf Amendment Bill 2024 is expected to gain further momentum in the coming days.
