Nationwide Peaceful Protest by Muslims Against Waqf Amendment Bill 2025
EC News Desk
Mumbai, April 11:
Widespread protests were observed across the country today, as Muslims peacefully voiced their opposition to the recently passed Waqf Amendment Bill 2025. Responding to the guidance issued by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, people wore black bands on their right hands as a mark of protest during the Friday congregational prayers.
From cities to smaller towns, Imams of Masajid and Muslim intellectuals addressed the faithful during the Friday sermons, highlighting the potential dangers and constitutional contradictions posed by the new amendment. They asserted that the legislation threatens minority rights, undermines constitutional secularism, and could disempower backward and underprivileged sections of society. While similar protests had been seen during last Friday’s prayers, today’s demonstration saw a more informed and broader participation, following increased awareness and mobilization throughout the week.
In Mumbai, Maharashtra, the protest was visibly significant. Worshippers at Markazul Ma’arif Masjid, Oshiwara, Jogeshwari, were seen wearing black bands during the Jumu’ah prayer, standing in peaceful solidarity against the Bill. Other parts of the city also witnessed similar gatherings, marked by calm discipline and constitutional concern.
Community leaders emphasized that the Waqf Amendment Bill 2025 is not merely a legal reform but a move that could dilute the autonomy of Waqf institutions and potentially lead to the misappropriation of Waqf properties. They appealed to secular and constitution-loving citizens of all faiths to recognize the larger implications of the amendment.
Protestors reiterated that their movement is peaceful, democratic, and grounded in constitutional values, aiming to protect the spirit of justice and equality enshrined in the Indian Constitution. As awareness continues to grow, the opposition to the Waqf Amendment Bill appears to be gaining momentum nationwide, with more protests expected in the coming weeks.
