The Assassination of the Supreme Leader of Islamic Republic and the growing horrors of war in the Middle East

The Israeli-American partnership in the war on Iran clearly demonstrates Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s success in prioritizing the Israeli perspective on Iran and making it a key element in American strategies for the region and the world. This signals the end of the previous wavering within the administration of US President Donald Trump, a wavering between a reluctance to engage in wars (following the disastrous outcomes of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan) and a tendency to prey on nations and peoples and assassinate elites, in the Israeli style. The assassination of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, also demonstrates the dominance of these methods in implementing this vision and the triumph of force over the rules of politics and war.
It is useful here to recall the events of the previous war on Iran (the so-called “12-Day War”) and how Israel managed to steer the American course toward war: On the morning of June 13th, Israel launched attacks (Operation “Rising Lion”) targeting key nuclear sites and personnel, military installations, and residential areas of military leaders and nuclear scientists.
Iran responded with Operation True Promise 3, targeting Israeli military, intelligence, and residential sites with ballistic missiles and drones. US President Donald Trump, who had built part of his political platform on “ending wars” (and winning the Nobel Peace Prize!), was forced to reaffirm America’s global leadership role by announcing his country’s participation in the war. This involved launching intensive airstrikes “in full coordination with Israel” (Operation Midnight Hammer) targeting nuclear facilities in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. However, two days later (June 24), he announced a ceasefire agreement.
The US participation in the war, from the very first day, and in full coordination with Israel, thus represents a significant and highly significant development. This time, Israel did not merely act as the spark that ignited the dynamics that prompted Trump’s intervention. Instead, it became the heart and “brain” of the military and security operations (with the US ambassador and a significant faction within the American administration adopting Israel’s religious and ideological narratives). Therefore, instead of the aforementioned American containment stance during the “12-day war,” we witnessed a massive American military mobilization over several weeks. Targeting Khamenei and the military and political leaders (including President Masoud Pezeshkian and former President Ahmadinejad, who was killed in the attack) became part of the battle plan, and “regime change” in Iran became part of the joint war propaganda.
The assassination of Khamenei and the top military commanders reveals, first and foremost, a profound political and security flaw in the Iranian regime’s vision. The fact that this assassination took place at Khamenei’s residence (which also killed his entire family) seems unbelievable, contradicting all security, political, and military logic. In this regard, it is not helpful to explain this as a result of a Karbala-style martyrdom operation, nor to attribute it to collusion within the regime (as is alleged to have occurred in Venezuela), as some Western analyses have suggested, especially after the major blow dealt to senior leaders last June, and the direct Israeli threats to assassinate Khamenei and his commanders (as well as the assassination in Lebanon of the Secretary-General of Hezbollah and its senior leaders, down to the lowest ranks).
The assassination, and the ongoing security and military developments, reveal a highly significant progress in warfare technologies, in which information is accumulated via the internet, mobile phones (Netanyahu spoke about this explicitly), social media, modern cars, and global financial transfers. This information is then processed and analyzed through artificial intelligence platforms, most of which are linked to intelligence agencies, so that all of humanity becomes its own informant, in every aspect of life and death. Israel and the United States no longer need field spies, except to carry out certain tasks that drones and remote observers cannot accomplish.
The Iranian response, which has targeted not only American bases and Israeli cities but also the Arabian Gulf region and ships in the Strait of Hormuz, demonstrates a shift from the “quasi-self-inflicted harm” that followed the assassination of Khamenei and his commanders, to igniting the region—a vital artery for global oil, gas, and resources. This tactic attempts to mirror Israel’s approach of waging war without red lines, except that it asserts that no one will escape the devastating costs of a war against Iran.
In the perilous circumstances currently gripping the Middle East, the question is what is the future of Iran after the assassination of its Supreme Leader? Rather, it is the future of the American presence in the region. Perhaps the most crucial question is: What is the future of the world that generations dream of, now that the world’s major powers openly commit assassinations and kidnappings, and their leaders engage in moral depravity?
A dangerous and dramatic scene has unfolded: In one of the dark corners of a world transformed into a room where the powerful entity play their games and commit their crimes, a glimmer appeared, which some mistook for the light of dawn. But it quickly became clear that it was the glare of missiles and lava targeting the world’s security and stability. Thus, the hopes of those awaiting a world governed by law, justice, mutual respect, and high moral standards are shattered, replaced by feelings of frustration and despair. When religious scholars, physicists, chemists, and nuclear scientists are assassinated by bandits, how can people feel safe or dream of a bright tomorrow free from crime, extortion, plunder, and depravity? When the words of philosophers, scientists, and inventors become irrelevant in guiding humanity’s course, replaced by the pronouncements of impostors and usurers, what value remains for the intellect that God created and addressed. When the murder of innocents goes unpunished and without real accountability, humanity truly falls under the rule of the jungle. When the disabled Palestinian sheikh, Ahmed Yassin, becomes the target of assassins as he returns from dawn prayers in Gaza (March 22, 2004), human values
Some have long believed that the logic of dialogue and negotiation would prevent wars and end the senseless destruction perpetrated by some with malevolent intentions. However, it is no longer a secret that such logic has no place in today’s world. The largest entity, the United Nations, which was built by minds aspiring to end wars after World War II, has become completely marginalized. It cannot utter a word that might disturb those who wield weapons, those who have spent money to establish an empire of evil that cares nothing for the fate of humanity, nor is it troubled by the suffering of those displaced from their homelands after they were occupied by gangs whose hands are stained with the blood of innocents and whose bellies are filled with ill-gotten gains. Their minds are no longer capable of thinking according to sound human logic. America has never abided by international resolutions or accepted the United Nations as an entity that unites the nations of the world under one umbrella, allowing them to negotiate among themselves on equal footing. Wasn’t this entity the dream of generations exhausted by the two world wars over a period of thirty years? How will the world’s people live in a world where nuclear-armed states reject the principle of international arbitration? This is a repugnant mentality of domination, relying on force to settle all disputes and disagreements. Where are the intellectuals in the West to speak out against the dark path humanity is heading towards under the rule of a handful of fanatics, some of whom are seeking escape from their personal predicaments and documented sexual crimes, perhaps even evidenced by testimonies and photographs?
The assassination of the Iranian Supreme Leader did not occur amidst a complete breakdown in communication between Iran and the United States. Rather, it took place while their negotiations in Geneva regarding the Iranian nuclear program, which has been subjected to considerable exaggeration and intimidation while still in its start. This occurred at a time when international estimates, including reports from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) extending to 2024, indicate that Israel possesses a nuclear arsenal comprising approximately 90 nuclear warheads. Israel maintains a policy of “nuclear ambiguity,” neither confirming nor denying its possession of these weapons, and relies on plutonium enrichment at the Dimonareactor in the Negev desert. Why do America and European countries insist on maintaining this entity’s permanent and qualitative superiority over all Arab states? It is certain that the biased Western political establishment sees only through a single lens and lacks any semblance of fairness when discussing the security threats facing the world in this era rife with crises. Therefore, Europe’s silence regarding America’s role in the world, and its involvement in the assassination of a religious and political leader of a country with limited resources and threatened by foreign intervention, assassinations, and political and economic sanctions, is not blamed. Instead, it acts as if this matter is insignificant in terms of international security and peace.
The negotiations between America and Iran regarding the nuclear program were going through one of their most dangerous phases, taking place amidst the clouds of war that the American-Israeli alliance had unleashed on Iran. This war lacks international support and is considered an act of aggression and a serious threat not only to the security of the region but also to the security of the world. There is no justification for Trump’s decision to ignite this conflict, especially given the ongoing negotiations that began in Qatar a few weeks prior. Predicting the outcome of this war is difficult after the Iranian response to the aggression was astonishingly forceful. It will be recorded that America’s first strike hit a school, killing more than 60 children. Recent years have witnessed a political and security campaign specifically targeting Iran, aimed at weakening it from within through covert and organized activities designed to force it to make significant concessions in negotiations that have now become clear were a cover for war. These negotiations gradually shifted from focusing on the nuclear issue to becoming a stage for the de facto trial of Iran, particularly regarding its stance on the Palestinian cause. This is the mindset that seeks to dominate the region by convincing the world that the Palestinian issue is over and that the Arab world must prepare to live in the “American-Israeli era” without question. With the absence of Arab and Islamic leaders willing to confront the powers coveting the region, the aforementioned alliance countries are experiencing unprecedented euphoria, bolstered by the presence of American fleets in the Indian Ocean, the Arabian Sea, and the Gulf region.
Clearly, Iran is the primary victim in this dramatic scenario, having been subjected to attempts to contain it by weakening its regional influence, imposing economic and military sanctions, assassinating its leaders—most recently Ayatollah Khamenei—and funding opponents of its regime. In addition, Iran is targeted for its security through attacks on its vital infrastructure, sometimes by airstrikes carried out by the US-Israeli alliance and other times by internal bombings. However, other Arab peoples are not immune to acts of revenge if they continue to reject occupation and hegemony. The assassination of the Supreme Leader was the latest attack targeting the Islamic Republic. It was preceded by a fire on February 26 at an industrial complex in Abadan, southern Iran, which produces plastic raw materials. This was preceded by another fire in a market in the Jannatabad neighborhood of western Tehran on February 3, an area teeming with stalls and shops. There have been numerous operations targeting Iran’s leaders and military commanders. Last year, the top tier of its military forces were eliminated in a single strike, without any effective international action to prevent these attacks, which occur without international authorization. Furthermore, its leaders, including President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Amir Hossein Abdollahian, and others, were killed on May 19, 2024, when explosive devices were planted on their plane. America continued its illegal activities until it reached the point of kidnapping Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife two months ago.
A week ago, in his State of the Union address to Congress on February 24, the US president stated that Tehran was “working on missiles that will soon reach” the United States. However, intelligence reports deemed this claim “exaggerated.” They noted that there were “no changes” to a declassified 2025 assessment by the US Defense Intelligence Agency, which indicated that Iran might need until 2035 to develop a military-capable intercontinental ballistic missile using its current space launch vehicles. Therefore, the assassination of the Supreme Leader was seen as occurring outside this context and as another step in a strategy to eliminate any challenge that could affect Israeli security.
The war that the US and Israel have imposed in the Middle East has exposed their intentions. US President Donald Trump has justified the attack on Iran by saying that Iran is reopening its nuclear program and that it could acquire nuclear weapons in the future. According to the US, Iran’s long-range missiles were also a threat to it. Israel is calling it preemptive, although Iran was ready for a comprehensive agreement with the US. In the talks held in Geneva and Vienna, Iran repeatedly reiterated its position that if the US lifted economic sanctions, Iran would also be ready to limit its nuclear activities. Iran wanted to guarantee that the agreement with the US would remain in place for a long time, and that the US would not withdraw from the agreement in the future. Iran was ready for talks with the United States regarding its nuclear program. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi repeatedly assured the United States that it was ready for talks and negotiations. He said that there was no benefit in temporary or pointless negotiations, and that he was ready for indirect negotiations and diplomacy.
On February 26, Omani-mediated talks were held in Geneva, Switzerland, on which the Omani Foreign Minister said that significant progress had been made in the talks. In addition, to address the concerns that the United States and Israel had about Iran, Iranian President Masoud Pazeshkian made it clear that Iran had no intention of making nuclear weapons because the country’s Supreme Leader has prohibited it according to Islamic law. Iranian President further said that when a religious leader prohibits something, his position is not based on expediency but purely on religious and jurisprudential grounds. Pazeshkian explained that a politician can change his statement according to the time and need, but a religious leader cannot speak against his faith and Sharia law. He said that Iran wants peace in the region and does not want war or the situation to worsen.
But the attack on Iran despite Iran’s desire for peace, its approach of avoiding confrontation and the ongoing negotiations is a clear proof that the US and Israel are forced by their own malice. They are not ready to accept any principle, rule and regulation. Backstabbing during the ongoing negotiations has been an old habit of the US and Israel, they have done this in the past as well. They had shown the same kind of behavior during the peace talks in Gaza, and in June 2025 with Iran itself, and now once again by raining missiles on Iran during the negotiations and targeting the top leadership of Iran, the US has proven that it does not care about any principle or rule.
The ambitions of the United States and Israel regarding Iran are no longer a secret; the alliance forces of America and Israel are ready to go to any extent to fulfill their ambitions. The accusations that have been made against Iran so far, some similar accusations have also been made against Iraq in 2003. False reports were prepared, Iraq was accused of developing weapons of mass destruction and if military action was not taken against Iraq immediately, it could threaten world peace. Then, such propaganda was spread all over the world that despite Iraq’s willingness to inspect its facilities and negotiate, Iraq was destroyed brick by brick without the permission of the United Nations. After violating the freedom and sovereignty of a free and sovereign country, killing millions of people, plundering Iraq’s resources, dividing it, and executing Saddam Hussein, the former British Prime Minister, Tony Bliar innocently revealed to the world that no trace of any weapons of mass destruction was found in Iraq. The reports were false, for which we apologize.
Now the US President wants to repeat this history in Iran. The question is, what are the concerns that are forcing the US to escalate the war against Iran despite the talks? Defense analysts say that amid the ongoing attacks on Iran by the US and Israel, Washington is worried that it may run out of defensive missiles, which are used to stop Iran’s massive drone and missile attacks, and this fear is prompting the US to destroy Iran’s missile and drone capabilities as soon as possible, before the US runs out of ammunition to defend itself. Donald Trump said on social media that these intense and precise attacks will continue until the goal of peace in the Middle East and the whole world is achieved.
The United States has waged a bloody war on Iran in the name of Israel’s defense and security, but it is incapable of understanding the implications of this aggression. In response to the attacks on its country, Iran has launched missile and drone attacks on Israel and US military bases in the region, including Qatar, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Bahrain. Iran has described these attacks as “defense of the homeland” and a “bold response to the usurping aggression.”
On the other hand, the Revolutionary Guards have announced the closure of the important sea passage of the Strait of Hormuz, which is an alarm bell for the stability of the global economy. Almost a fifth of the world’s crude oil passes through the strait. Its closure could also cause an oil crisis in the world. But the tragedy is that the US president is in no way willing to understand the implications of the fire of war he has ignited in the Middle East, but he is constantly adding fuel to the fire with his actions and statements. US President Donald Trump, while addressing the Iranian people, said that “bombs will fall everywhere” and incited them to rise up against their government and take control. The tragic thing is that in this whole situation, the United Nations has become a suspended member. Instead of openly condemning the attack on Iran, the international community is teaching Iran the etiquette of war. Even Muslim countries are not ready to condemn the American aggression. The attack on Iran by the United States and Israel has no moral justification, nor does international law allow it. If the violations of international law, the Charter of Human Rights, and the principles of the Geneva Convention continue in this way, not only the Middle East but also the peace of the entire world will be disrupted.
