Muslim Personal Law Board’s delegation met the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024

Yesterday evening a delegation of All India Muslim Personal Law Board met the JPC on Waqf in Lok Sabha Committee room on the invitation received from the JPC on 11th September 2024. The following members joined the JPC meeting: Maulana Khalid Saifullah Rahmani, President of the Board, Ml. Mohd. Fazlur Rahim Mujaddidi, General Secretary, Mr. M.R. Shamshad, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court and Member Executive Committee AIMPLB; Dr. S. Q. R. Ilyas, Spokesperson and Member, Executive Committee, AIMPLB; Prof.(Dr.) Saud Alam Qasmi, Member, Executive Committee, AIMPLB. Earlier Board had already submitted a detailed written submissions with the JPC, in addition to the short submissions which the Board had informally given to the Hon’ble Chairperson of the JPC on 24th August 2024.
Dr. Ilyas introduced the Members of the Delegation to the JPC.
The President of the Board & Prof. Qasmi made short Oral Submissions to point out the contemplated problems in case the amendments are permitted. They also explained the position of Waqf in Islamic Sharia. Then Mr. M.R. Shamshad, Senior Advocate made detailed Oral Submissions on legal aspects and the legal consequences emerging from the proposed amendments. Mr. Arijit Sarkar Advocate assisted him. The General Secretary and spokesperson of the Board gave a brief overview of the situation emerging from the proposed legislation and the response of the Muslim community at large.
Our written submission was circulated to the JPC members and some of them appreciated it by saying it is excellent and has cleared many of our doubts and answered our questions.
Considering the fact that the proceedings were before the Joint Parliamentary Committee, no details can be shared with public at large. However, we want to make it clear that we have conveyed the message of the community at large in opposition to the proposed amendment.
