A thought-provoking and intellectually enriching program on “Women’s Contribution to Islam” was held at the MBMC Auditorium, Mira Road (East), with the aim of showcasing the invaluable role of women in Islamic history and encouraging their active participation in the modern era.
The program commenced with an introductory address by Uzma Naheed, President of IIWA, who emphasized the multifaceted contributions of women across various domains of life. Elaborating on the Qur’anic verse (الرجال قوامون علی النساء), she explained the concept of Qawwam as “protector and caretaker,” highlighting that Islam accords men the responsibility of safeguarding and supporting women, rather than asserting superiority.
Renowned British Islamic scholar Dr. Mohammad Akram Nadwi delivered a keynote address, shedding light on the historical role of women in different religious traditions. He remarked that while many religions have contributed to the marginalization of women, Islam stands distinct in empowering them with rights and dignity. He particularly highlighted the remarkable contributions of female scholars in the fields of Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) and Hadith, drawing attention to the significant number of women Hadith narrators and their pivotal role in the preservation and transmission of Prophetic traditions.
In his presidential address, Maulana Mohammad Burhanuddin Qasmi, Director of Markazul Ma’arif Education and Research Centre, Mumbai, underscored the importance of intellectual engagement and critical thinking. He noted that differences of opinion among researchers and Mujtahideen serve as a gateway to deeper inquiry and academic advancement. However, he cautioned against blind adherence without personal understanding and investigation. Reflecting on history, he elaborated on the extensive contributions of women in diverse fields such as education, medicine, economics, sociology, and literature.
The event witnessed the participation of Ulama and women from varied social and educational backgrounds, reflecting a collective commitment to recognizing and advancing women’s role in society within the framework of Islamic teachings.
